Rajiv Ranjan, Assistant Professor of Hindi and Urdu in the Department of Linguistics, Languages, and Cultures, was interviewed by the UCLA International Institute in a podcast on the topic of teaching grammar to heritage learners of Hindi.

The first part of the podcast aims to reflect on the role of grammar instruction for the development of the linguistic and communicative competence of heritage learners, emphasizing the importance of grammar in helping them achieve a higher level of language proficiency. Dr. Ranjan also discusses empirical research to investigate what type of grammar instruction and feedback are more helpful for these learners, the relationship between grammar and task/project-based teaching and the communicative approach of language teaching, as well as inductive vs. deductive and implicit vs. explicit grammar instruction.
