Michigan State University (MSU) welcomes students from Big Ten Academic Alliance (BTAA) universities who are registered for language and culture classes through the CourseShare program. As a student enrolled in a course through CourseShare, you will be an honorary Spartan for a semester with access to some MSU technology and educational resources, while ultimately receiving credit from your home institution.

At MSU, CourseShare is coordinated by the LCTL Coordinator, Dr. Emily Heidrich Uebel in the Department of Linguistics, Languages, and Cultures. Your home university CourseShare program is another source of support for you.

IMPORTANT

If you are registered for a MSU course through CourseShare, please expect to receive an email from the MSU Registrar’s Office to your home university email account about initiating your new MSU NetID. This is the most essential step in accessing your course and connecting with your instructor. The email will likely arrive with the subject “Welcome Letter.” Please read this email carefully and follow the instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Getting Started and During the Class

You will be following the MSU Academic Calendar

You will receive a welcome email from the MSU Registrar (see above) which will have instructions for activating your MSU NetID.

Once you initiate your account, you will be able to access your MSU email and class information on D2L. Please note that the MSU email account will be the primary method of contact between you and your instructor.

Follow the instructions in the Welcome Letter from the registrar, which includes the contact information for MSU IT.

The class may be fully remote (everyone will attend remotely), HyFlex (some students will attend in person and others remotely), or a combination of two. However, if you are taking a MSU course through the CourseShare program, you will attend remotely. In most cases, you do not need to go to a designated location to receive the course, and can connect from home or a convenient quiet location for you. If you do need to report to a particular location, your local CourseShare coordinator will be in touch with you, or this will be on your home campus schedule.

Please email Dr. Emily Heidrich Uebel, the MSU LCTL Coordinator/CourseShare Coordinator and let her know the course you are taking. If you know your instructor’s name, you may also reach out to them. You might also reach out to your home CourseShare program or advisor with questions.

Please check your course syllabus and/or speak with your instructor.

Please let your home disability resource center know that you are enrolled in a remote course at another university and contact the MSU Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities. For accommodations such as extra testing time, you can also provide your accommodation letter to the instructor.

Final Steps (After the Course Ends)

The grading process requires the work of multiple staff at two universities, and it does take time. There is nothing special you need to do for your grade to be applied – it may simply take longer than it does for regular classes.

If your grade is not yet applied, and it is causing a problem for you, reach out to Dr. Emily Heidrich Uebel, the MSU LCTL Coordinator/CourseShare Coordinator for assistance.
