Sharada P. Phadke and Radha G. Joshi Award

Purpose and award amounts

The goal of this endowment is to support undergraduate study in linguistics and South Asian languages. Read more about the Joshi family here. In a typical year, four awards of $500 each will be made. 

Eligibility

  1. First priority will go to any graduating Linguistics major whose undergraduate thesis or independent faculty-supervised research project is on some aspect of South Asian linguistics, and who is deemed worthy of an award by the Linguistics faculty based on overall GPA and quality of the thesis work. Students graduating in either Fall or Spring are eligible.
  2. In years where no Linguistics students qualify or only one student does, the remaining awards will be given to outstanding Indian and South Asian studies minors. These awards will be decided by the Director of the Indian and South Asian Studies program in conjunction with the Linguistics Undergraduate Program Director.
    • Up to two awards for best student in Hindi/Urdu 300 level classes
    • Up to two awards for best graduating IAS minors

Procedure

For the Linguistics awards, the Linguistics undergraduate director will bring a request for nominations every semester at the Linguistics program faculty meeting (on or before November 15 and March 15 respectively), with decisions being finalized the following meeting.

If one or more awards remain open, the Linguistics Undergraduate Program Director will meet with the Director of the Indian and South Asian Studies program to collectively select the recipient(s) of the IAS/Hindi-Urdu awards.

If you receive an award

Students will receive their awards at the Linguistics, Languages, and Cultures departmental annual awards ceremony.
