M. Endo Hudson’s research areas are in linguistics: pragmatics, discourse, and functional grammar. She analyzes spoken and written data in natural interaction considering historical, cognitive, and interactive factors, and from multiple perspectives such as speaker-hearer and speaker-utterance relations, information status, viewpoint, volition, emotivity, speech acts, and politeness. Her publications include: Pragmatics of Japanese: Perspectives on grammar, interaction and culture (2018), John Benjamins (co-editor); Modern Japanese Grammar: A Practical Guide (2013) and Workbook (2014), Routledge, UK (co-author); Japanese Language and Literature, vol. 46, no. 1, Special Section in Honor of Dr. S. Makino: Current Issues in Japanese Language Education, Acquisition, and Linguistics (2012), American Association of Teachers of Japanese (editor); Japanese/Korean Linguistics 13 (2008), Stanford: CSLI (co-editor); English Grammar for Students of Japanese (2000), Arnold, UK (author), and many articles. She has taught Japanese language at all levels, teaching methods, and linguistics. In summer she teaches in the Master’s Program in Japanese Language Pedagogy at Columbia University. She is a recipient of 2004 Japanese Foreign Minister’s Certificate of Commendation (Gaimu Daijin Hyoushou), 1993-94 MSU Teacher-Scholar Award, and 1992-93 Lilly Endowment Teaching Fellowship.
