Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages
Welcome to the home page for our undergraduate and graduate TESOL programs, where we focus on current theoretical and practical approaches to language teaching. Our graduates are employed throughout the US and the world in positions involving language teaching, teacher training, materials development, assessment, and program administration. Our core faculty is among the best in the nation and includes prolific researchers, journal editors, teacher educators, and people with a broad range of teaching and assessment experience.
We offer
Teaching Opportunities
Our teaching practicums offer students a chance to team-teach their own class in a community-based ESL program in addition to microteaching activities in other classes.
Research Opportunities
Most classes include some discussion of current research while others offer opportunities to conduct research.
Professional Development
Our courses offer a broad perspective on the field of TESOL and include assignments that help introduce students to the profession.
Degree Areas
MA TESOL
We offer an MA in TESOL to students interested in teaching English as a second language abroad or in the community. Some MATESOL students, who are interested in research, have gone on to pursue the SLS PhD or other doctoral programs at MSU.
Minor in TESOL
Undergraduate students who are not pursuing teacher certification in the College of Education but are interested in teaching English abroad or in adult programs in the US may add a TESOL Minor. Students in the College of Education should look into the TESOL Teaching Minor.
Dual Enrollment For Undergraduates
We offer options for undergraduates from linguistics and other majors to begin the MA program early and double count some of their credits.
PhD in Second Language Studies
A PhD in Second Language Studies is offered by the department.
